The initial stage of the championship has already got over. Let’s have a little throwback look at the remarkable matches of the stage!

France > Denmark
(Europe, Group A)

G2 Esports has become the only participant not from Denmark participating in Group A but it was not an obstacle for them when they had the best performance. Their serious opponents were Astralis, Heroic, and North that are the best teams of the Danish division. In this quartette, G2 Esports lost only the first battle with North that ended up in 1-2 after that they pulled themselves together and beat all their enemies. The last match of Group A could be called the most remarkable: that was the meeting where G2 and Astralis fought for getting to the upper bracket. The first map was uneasy for both teams and the battle ended up with 16-13 for G2 but the second map got easy for the French players where they lost only seven rounds.

North showed the worst result and finished participating in the championship taking the 13-16 place.

Who Said That Mousesports Were Favorites of the Group?
(Europe, Group B)

After their successful completion of the previous year, mousesports got remembered as one of the strongest teams in Europe. In fact, they are not showing great results now. In Group B, they got a pleasant surprise by the organizers which were three easy opponents that represented the Tier-2 stage: BIG, Complexity Gaming, and MAD Lions. Despite all the chances given to mousesports, they were not able to use them. Just a few viewers could expect Ropz and his teammates not to be able to win even once at the previous competition, however, that was what happened. The team left the championship with the 13-16 place and the only thing that the tournament could get from this tournament was experience. Meanwhile, BIG made a great surprise for the audience. Having put in a lot of effort, they defeated all their opponents losing one map to each of them. However, the pains were worth the results they got. The team took the first place with a score of 3-0 and joined the upper bracket where they would play with FaZe Clan. Now tabseN and his teammates are going to have a serious test.

FaZe Clan’s Domination
(Europe, Group C)

FaZe Clan is playing badly but their results could sometimes be better as they have a periodical character. For example, at first, they beat all the opponents at BLAST Premier Spring 2020 winning the first place there, and then they took 7-8 place at IEM Katowice 2020 and the 5th position at ESL Pro League Season 11. At ESL One Road to Rio 2020 and Gamers Without Borders, they improved their results and took 3 places. Nevertheless, not every viewer was ready to see that NiKo and his teammates would be able to defeat all their opponents and make it to the upper bracket to the playoff. The decisive meeting against Fnatic needs special attention. After a difficult series against Spirit with two maps that ended overtime, the team got prepared for the meeting with the Swedish players. Nevertheless, both played maps were close to failures and overtimes. First of them was won by the players from FaZe with a score of 16-14 while the second one resulted in 16-13.

Absence of Intrigue is Boring
(Европа, Группа D)

If in Group A not everybody could expect G2 to win the first place and just a few people could suppose that mouz would not advance to the playoff and in Group D, the situation is absolutely opposite. The favorites of the audience - NAVI - got the first place, Vitality and NiP that are present in Top 15 also got to the upper bracket and the only participant that was not seen among Top Twenty, finished participating in the competition — ENCE took 13-16 place. Even though Natus Vincere won first place in the group but we could never call their way easy. At the first match against Vitality, the players were close to failure when they lost the first map and the second battle with ENCE also ended up in a defeat for them. In the end, NAVI just had to beat NiP which was an easy task for the esportsmen so the team took first place in Group D and advanced to the upper bracket of the playoff. Consistently, Vitality and NiP took the 2-3 places in the quartette and joined the lower bracket while ENCE left the championship getting only experience there.

Intriguing America

The matches in the American region turned out to be not as predictable as we had expected. The audience was used to seeing Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses as leaders of the division, however, this time it was really different. In Group A, Liquid took the second place giving way to stronger esportsmen from FURIA Esports. The latter, by the way, did not lose any match which is really worth of huge respect. In this quartette, MiBR got placed on the third position while the players from Chaos Esports Club were forced to leave the championship as their position was the fourth. Unlike Liquid, Evil Geniuses not only fell short of the expectations but also were unable to pass to the playoff. After he lost the first battle with Cloud9, it was clear that there was something wrong with their gaming shape. Their fans’ guess came true and they could not beat Gen.G Esports and, as a result, they got placed on the fourth position. Cloud9 and Gen.G took 2-3 place and made it to the playoff to the lower bracket and 100 Thieves moved to the upper bracket where the esportsmen have to fight with FURIA Esports for a spot at the final.

Conclusion

In total, the tournament showed us that online format can make teams show different results. The rosters that performed poorly at the LAN championships show good results online while Tier-1 teams that have considerable experience of playing CS:GO may not meet the expectations of their fans and please the fans to make a bet on the outsiders of the match.
