Deadlock is ready to step into the esports limelight

A new esport is rising from the horizon as a new IP from Valve Entertainment. This is Deadlock and it’s shaping up to be a new esports darling alongside Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. It is still in beta exclusive to testers and the people whom they invite.

What’s so special about Deadlock that people speculate it to become a major esport? Reasons vary and opinions are still split among gamers who are intrigued by the prospect. It’s still in beta when it was playable in August 2024 with no clear release date yet. For now, this is what you need to know about Deadlock from Valve Entertainment:

What is Deadlock?

Deadlock falls into the category called ‘Hero Shooter’. It’s a popular game genre that is typically a tactical team-based shooting game where players decide what abilities to bring to their lineup based on the character they choose. Similar games in this genre are popular in Stake Casino Germany esports betting like Overwatch 2 and VALORANT.

Another genre Deadlock falls into is called the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA). Its main characteristic is that competing teams spawn in bases on opposite ends of a symmetrical map. Similar esports that follow this rule are Dota 2 and League of Legends, except the camera orientation is a third-person shooter.

These bases are connected by four roads with marching troops to push the offense and defensive structures to prevent the opposite side from advancing. The goal is to push through any route until the enemy’s base is destroyed.

Competitive gameplay mechanics in Deadlock

Like other MOBA, Deadlock has a resource management system that determines teams’ lead against the other. It revolves around a currency called ‘souls’ which players collect upon killing an enemy unit. A bubble will appear floating out of those units that anyone can shoot.

The player earns more souls for shooting the bubble coming from an enemy unit and destroying bubbles coming from fallen allies. Destroying bubbles deny the enemies the opportunity to earn those souls, stifling their progress.

Souls are used to pay for upgrades in Deadlock. Earning them fast and spending them whenever possible is the key to having a stronger team than the opponent. Therefore, stopping the other team from earning souls is the basic competitive strategy in Deadlock.

Public reception over the new live service multiplayer

Deadlock is currently an invite-only game so Valve Entertainment controls access to the game during beta. The general public’s view of the game is limited to online content like live streams, videos, and blogs. Fans eagerly await its popularity and eventual inclusion among the categories for Stake Games esports betting.

There is still a large population online showing interest in Deadlock. Most of them are fans of creators who were invited to play the game. The skeptics are coming from comments on social media and YouTube comparing the game with others like it. For now, the most popular points of comparison are Paladins and Team Fortress 2.
