A competitor at the ongoing 2024 Pokemon TCG World Championships was disqualified after a video surfaced showing the player cheating during one of their matches. While the Pokemon video games have gained global recognition, the trading card game has also achieved significant success, becoming a popular activity among fans and collectors alike. Some rare Pokemon cards have been sold for thousands of dollars, but for many enthusiasts, the competitive scene is the main attraction.

The 2024 Pokemon TCG Championships have drawn the best players from around the world to Honolulu, where they are competing for the title of world champion. The event culminates on Sunday with championship matches in three divisions: Junior, Senior, and Master. However, one player's journey in the tournament was cut short due to a cheating incident.

According to Dexerto, a video from the event went viral, showing a match between Luke Parkes and Carlos Eduardo Ruiz, where Ruiz was seen taking a card from his discard pile and hiding it on his lap. He later added the card to his hand, giving himself an unfair advantage. Reports indicated that Ruiz was disqualified during a subsequent match, though the official reason for his disqualification was not publicly disclosed.

The cheating incident sparked outrage among fans, particularly because Ruiz was using a playmat designated for "Pokemon Professors," individuals responsible for ensuring fair play and rule enforcement in the game. Many fans have called for a lifetime ban for Ruiz from Pokemon TCG tournaments, and a Mexican gaming organization associated with him severed ties following the scandal.

This controversy casts a shadow over what is otherwise expected to be a major event for the Pokemon franchise. The Pokemon Company has promised "special news" during the final day of the 2024 World Championships, leading to speculation that more details about the upcoming Pokemon: Legends Z-A may be revealed. Last year's event introduced new Pokemon for Scarlet and Violet, as well as updates for Pokemon Unite, leaving fans eager for more exciting announcements as this year's tournament comes to a close.
